Reading activities for babies can begin long before children are able to recognise words or turn pages independently. This week, our babies enjoyed a very special milestone at Blue Windmill Nursery as they visited the mobile library for the very first time.
The excitement was clear from the moment we arrived. There were books to discover, colourful displays to look at and plenty of opportunities to explore a new environment. For many of the children, this was their first experience of visiting a library, making it an exciting adventure as well as a valuable learning opportunity.
At Blue Windmill Nursery, we believe that reading starts with curiosity, conversation and shared experiences. While babies may not yet sit and read a story from beginning to end, they are constantly developing the skills that support future reading. Looking at pictures, listening to language, handling books and sharing stories with trusted adults all help to build strong foundations for literacy.
Trips such as our mobile library visit are an important part of the reading experiences we provide. By introducing children to books in different settings, we help them develop positive associations with reading from an early age. These experiences also support communication and language development as children hear new words, ask questions and share their discoveries with adults and friends.
Our visit also linked beautifully with this year’s national focus on reading. Encouraging a love of books in the early years can have a lasting impact, helping children to become confident communicators and enthusiastic learners as they grow.
The mobile library staff gave us a warm welcome and the children thoroughly enjoyed browsing the books and taking in everything around them. It was wonderful to see so many smiles, pointing fingers and excited expressions throughout the visit.
We look forward to returning soon and continuing to provide engaging reading activities for babies that inspire a lifelong love of stories, books and learning.
